Step Deck Lowboy Trailer

Category: Heavy-Haul Transport • Specialized Equipment • Oversized Freight
A Step Deck Lowboy Trailer is a specialized open trailer featuring a multi-level deck design with a lowered main well positioned close to the ground. It is engineered to transport tall, heavy, or oversized equipment—such as excavators, bulldozers, and industrial machinery—while keeping total overall height within legal highway clearance limits.

Three Pillars of Step Deck Lowboy Transport

1. Height Clearance Optimization

Drops deck height to 18–24 inches off the ground, allowing shipments up to 12 feet tall to clear bridges and overpasses without permits.

2. Heavy Capacity Handling

Utilizes reinforced multi-axle configurations (2 to 8+ axles) to legally carry payload weights ranging from 40,000 to over 80,000 lbs.

3. Ground-Level Drive-On Access

Features detachable gooseneck necks that detach from the front, allowing heavy wheeled or tracked machinery to drive straight onto the deck.

Key Features of a Step Deck Lowboy Trailer

Step deck lowboy trailers are custom-engineered for extreme weight distribution and oversized cargo securement:

  • Upper Deck (Gooseneck): Elevated front deck section resting over the tractor’s 5th wheel, ideal for carrying smaller tools, buckets, or attachments.
  • Main Well (Lower Deck): Ultra-low center deck deck section providing maximum vertical clearance for tall cargo.
  • Removable Gooseneck (RGN): Hydraulic neck system that detaches from the front of the trailer to drop the main deck flush with the ground.
  • Flip Axles & Boosters: Add-on axle assemblies attached to the rear to distribute heavy payload weight across more wheels for highway compliance.
  • Outriggers (Deck Extensions): Swing-out steel brackets along the deck sides that widen the usable load surface for extra-wide machinery.
  • D-Rings & Chain Slots: Heavy-duty, forged anchor points positioned throughout the deck for high-tensile chain binder securement.

Common Types of Open Drop Deck Trailers

Trailer Classification Main Deck Height Best Used For
Standard Step Deck (Single Drop) 36 to 42 inches Mid-height machinery, building materials, tractors, and cargo up to 10 feet tall.
Lowboy / Double Drop Trailer 18 to 24 inches Tall equipment up to 12 feet high, heavy industrial tanks, transformers, and oversized structural steel.
Removable Gooseneck (RGN Lowboy) 18 to 24 inches Self-propelled heavy construction machinery (excavators, loaders) requiring front drive-on loading capabilities.
Fixed-Neck Lowboy 20 to 24 inches Heavy static cargo loaded via rear ramps or overhead cranes where detachable front necks are not required.

How a Step Deck Lowboy Works in Practice

  1. 1
Preparation & Detachment: The tractor lowers the hydraulic gooseneck, detaches it from the front of the lowboy trailer, and pulls forward clear of the deck.
  2. 2
Drive-On Loading: Heavy tracked or wheeled machinery (e.g., an excavator) is driven forward directly over the lowered front ramp onto the main well.
  3. 3
Reconnection & Securement: The tractor backs up, reattaches the hydraulic gooseneck, raises the deck to transit height, and secures the load using heavy-duty grade 70/80 transport chains and lever binders.
  4. 4
Permitted Route Transit: The load travels along pre-approved highway routes, navigating low bridges and underpasses safely due to the lowered deck center.

Difference: Step Deck (Single Drop) vs. Lowboy (Double Drop) Trailers

While both are open drop-deck trailers, a Step Deck Trailer (Single Drop) drops down once behind the tractor cab (deck height ~3 feet off the ground). A Lowboy Trailer (Double Drop) drops down behind the cab and then rises back up over the rear trailer axles, creating a sunken middle well (~1.5 to 2 feet off the ground). Lowboys provide much lower ground clearance, making them essential for super-tall or super-heavy construction equipment.
