Soft Side Curtain Trailer

Category: Fleet Equipment • Specialized Transport • Freight Handling
A Soft Side Curtain Trailer (commonly known as a curtainsider) is a commercial trailer combining the flatbed's fast side-loading capability with the weather protection of an enclosed dry van. It features rigid front bulkhead and rear doors paired with heavy-duty, retractable PVC side curtains that slide back for full side access by forklifts.

Three Pillars of Soft Side Curtain Trailers

1. Rapid Side-Loading

Allows forklifts to load and unload long, bulky, or palletized cargo directly from either side without waiting for dock access.

2. All-Weather Protection

Seals completely along upper tracks and bottom tensioners to shield cargo from rain, snow, dirt, and wind exposure during transit.

3. Tarp-Free Operational Efficiency

Eliminates the time-consuming and dangerous manual tarping process required on traditional open flatbeds.

Key Features of a Soft Side Curtain Trailer

Engineered for high-turnaround logistics, curtainsiders rely on structural frame components and heavy tensioning hardware:

  • Reinforced PVC Side Curtains: High-density polyester curtains coated in PVC, often woven with anti-slash steel web straps for structural integrity.
  • Upper Roller Track & Trolleys: Smooth-sliding overhead aluminum tracks that allow curtains to pull back effortlessly like a window drape.
  • Bottom Tensioning Buckles: Stainless steel or alloy ratchets lined along the bottom rail to pull the curtain drum-tight against wind loads.
  • Front & Rear Tensioning Poles: Vertical winding mechanisms that draw the curtains tight horizontally across the length of the trailer.
  • Rigid Front Bulkhead & Swing Doors: Solid metal front wall and rear doors maintaining structural rigidity and dock loading options.
  • Removable Side Posts (Pillars): Structural support posts that swing out or slide out of the way to create unobstructed side loading bays.

Comparison of Open & Enclosed Trailer Equipment

Trailer Type Loading Method Best Used For
Soft Side Curtain Trailer Side Forklift / Rear Dock Lumber, building materials, long pipe bundles, palletized beverages, and side-loaded machinery.
Hard Side Dry Van Rear Dock Only Standard boxed goods, e-commerce pallets, and high-security freight requiring rigid metal walls.
Standard Flatbed (Open) Side / Overhead Crane / Rear Oversized equipment and steel coils, requiring manual tarping for weather sensitive cargo.
Conestoga Trailer Side / Overhead Crane Heavy flatbed machinery requiring rolling tarp frame coverage for complete top and side crane loading.

How a Soft Side Curtain Trailer Works in Practice

  1. 1
Unlocking & Retraction: The driver releases the bottom tension buckles and front winding pole, sliding the curtain back to expose the open side of the trailer deck.
  2. 2
Forklift Side-Loading: Forklifts load oversized pallets or long commodities (e.g., lumber, tubing) directly onto the deck from ground level.
  3. 3
Internal Cargo Securement: Cargo is anchored to internal floor D-rings using standard winches and cargo straps to prevent load shifting.
  4. 4
Curtain Closure & Tensioning: The curtain is pulled shut, the winding pole locks it horizontally, and bottom buckles are ratcheted tight to weather-seal the load for transit.

Difference: Soft Side Curtain Trailer vs. Conestoga Trailer

While both trailers use soft fabric walls to protect flatbed cargo, a Soft Side Curtain Trailer has a fixed roof structure where only the flexible side walls slide open horizontally. In contrast, a Conestoga Trailer features an entire accordian-like tarp system (including roof and frame) that rolls forward or backward on tracks, leaving the entire flatbed deck open for top-loading via overhead cranes.
